2020 Capstone Project

Malia Paselk

Nature Knows Best
Using green infrastructure to improve stormwater management and community recreation.

Flooding has been a perennial issue in California with engineered solutions designed to remove stormwater efficiently. This aging infrastructure is prime to be reimagined to address stormwater as a natural resource.

This project seeks to transform a stormwater channel within a large neighborhood park located in Long Beach using green infrastructure stormwater managementtechniques and principles. By "daylighting" the channel and elevating the surrounding park, the community is provided with a safer and more ecologically sustainable stormwater system and greater connection to their natural environment.
